Habitat for Humanity International is a nonprofit, nondenominational Christian housing organization. We welcome all people to join us as we build simple, decent, affordable, houses in partnership with those in need of adequate shelter. Since 1976, Habitat has built more than 100,000+ houses in more than 80 countries, including some 30,000 houses across the United States. Groups work to improve housing for the needs of the greater community. Activities are seasonal and training is provided.
2024 CATHOLIC BUILD
Austin Habitat for Humanity and Catholic churches and individuals in the Austin area have been coming together for over twenty years (26 to be exact!) to build a home for a deserving family in our community. This year will be no exception as H4H heads to East Austin to build a home. Through faith in action, by our volunteers and our donors, Habitat Austin and local Catholics are working together to eliminate substandard housing- one family at a time.
Meet the family:
Jacki is a dedicated single mother of three children: Julian (17), Jaikob (15), and Myles (12), who is looking to improve the life of her family through homeownership. She was born and raised in
El Paso, TX, and moved to Austin in 2004. Having just graduated from Austin Community College last year with an Associate's Degree in Liberal Arts, she supports her family by working as a billing clerk in the accounting department at a local automotive group.
As a single-income family in the rapidly growing city of Austin, Jacki has found it very difficult to make her dreams of homeownership come true. She lives in a Foundation Communities affordable housing community, where she has resided for twelve years. Jacki is looking to move forward with her life, build equity, and invest in her family. She applied for the Austin Habitat Homeownership Program because it gave her the hope of achieving her dream.
She says, "I have worked since I was 16 and have never stopped trying to get ahead with what little I have. It has been our dream to own a home in Austin, and we have attempted multiple times throughout the past few years. We have been told no so many times along the way that it has been a heartbreaking experience. Applying for this Habitat home was my last attempt to become a homeowner before I accepted the fate of never becoming one in this city and being able to get there while my kids were still kids. This program has changed that thinking and excited us again in our journey!"
With their new Austin Habitat home, Jacki and her sons are most looking forward to a fresh start, exploring their new neighborhood and making meals in their kitchen for family and friends. Jacki would like to thank all the sponsors, volunteers, and staff that have made her goal a reality. "Thank you for believing in our family and supporting us along the way. This program has given us the opportunity to get our foot in the door as homeowners and for this dream to become a reality for us. For that, we are forever thankful!"
