Fr. Callan receiving the chalice in memory of Sir Knight, Jack Josey.
The Knights of Columbus have an additional order that is associated with multiple councils, referred to as the "4th Degree" which is the Patriotic Order of the Knights. It is the men of this degree who embody the fourth principle of the Order, patriotism, and the fact that one can be faithful to one's virtues and be a faithful citizen at the same time. Members of this degree hold the special honor of holding the title "Sir Knight". Additionally, they are identified with distinct regalia at civic and church events, serving as honor guards and color guards, or standing in respect at funerals for members or during Eucharist adoration.
There is also a program called "The Memorial Chalice Program" within the 4th Degree. As a tribute to the departed, a chalice, engraved with the name of the 4th Degree Sir Knight, is given to a bishop, priest, parish, or mission. During the process, we ask the family if a chalice should be presented on behalf of their spouse. It also allows them to decide who receives the chalice. A presentation is arranged once a person has been identified. The presentation may take the form of a public presentation or a private one. Since the family of the deceased live in Houston and they did not want to be part of the presentation, we decided to present Fr Callan's remembrance during our Assembly meeting. Each time the chalice is used at Mass, a tribute to the deceased Knight is offered.
A Knight does not automatically receive a chalice issued to them, as they must be of the 4th Degree, the family must approve the purchase of the chalice, and that family selects the recipient. Thus, the "SK" stands for "Sir Knight."
